Windows 10 has a nasty habit of installing updates and restarting your computer automatically.  If you are using Gym Assistant and GateKeeper to manage 24/7 access to your facility this can definitely cause you headaches.

GateKeeper must be running for Access Control to function, but a Windows user must be logged in to start GateKeeper.

You can configure Windows to login a user account automatically at startup.  While this configuration reduces security, if the computer itself if secured (i.e. locked in an office or secure location) then this configuration will ensure that Access Control resumes working whenever the computer is started.

This article outlines how to setup the following actions to occur automatically when your computer starts up:

  • Login to Windows
  • Start Gym Assistant
  • Lock the screen

Automatically login to Windows

Click on Start then enter the command "netplwiz" (without quotes) in the search box.  Now press the ENTER key.
This command will load the Advanced User Accounts Control Panel applet.

  1. In the Users tab, uncheck the box next to Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
  2. Click on the Apply button at the bottom of the User Accounts window.
  3. When the Automatically Log On dialog box appears, enter the user name you wish to automatically login to Windows with. Then enter your account password in the two fields where it's asked.
  4. Click the OK button.
  5. Click OK on the User Accounts window to complete the process.

From now on, Windows will log on automatically when your PC starts up.

  3. Paste the application shortcut that you copied above.

From now on, Gym Assistant will start now automatically once you login to Windows.

Automatically lock the screen

  1. Start Task Scheduler:
    • Click the Start button, then type “Task Scheduler”.
    • Click on Task Scheduler in the list that appears.
  2. In the Task Scheduler application click Create Basic Task in the Actions pane.
  3. Assign a name for the task, e.g. “Lock screen at startup”, then click Next.
  4. For Trigger, select When I log on, then click Next.
  5. For Action, select Start a program, then click Next.
  6. For Start a Program:

  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Finish.

From now on, your screen will automatically as soon as you login to Windows.

Test it out!

Now restart your computer and don't touch anything.  Windows should automatically login and then your screen should lock.

After about 20 seconds Gym Assistant and GateKeeper should automatically startup behind the lock screen.

After waiting for about a minute go ahead and log into Windows.  You should seen Gym Assistant and GateKeeper happily managing your access control.
